LoRa Based Smarter Energy Monitoring Solution for Water and Gas Meters

LoRa Based Smarter Energy Monitoring Solution

Semtech Corporation has recently announced that Vision Metering, LLC (Vision) has incorporated Semtech’s LoRa devices and the LoRaWAN protocol into its line of advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) based smart electric meters and meter interface units for water and gas meters.

The Vision’s LoRa-based applications allow the upgrade of legacy metering solutions that require traditional walk-by or drive-by reading methods, to fixed, long-range AMI, for hourly or daily data transfer over LoRaWAN networks for efficient utility management and billing. Vision’s LoRa-based AMI-based meters enable smarter overall energy monitoring with the reduced operating cost.

Semtech’s LoRa devices, on the other hand, provide the perfect IoT platform for cooperative and public owned utilities to ‘future proof’ municipal operations to enable simple deployment of interoperable applications while avoiding costly vendor lock-in. The minimal deployment cost, scalability based on customer needs, and ease of use make applications perfect solutions for transforming legacy systems.

Vision’s smart AMI-based meters leverage the LoRaWAN protocol and have the ability to combine long-range networking and low power operation. Besides, the meters enable cooperatives and public utilities to reduce costs and achieve smarter, efficient energy management. Also, they are capable of leveraging the proven capabilities of LoRa devices for the utility vertical to provide public and cooperative utilities with flexible deployment options and real-time data to improve efficiency.
